Shake Off Your Problems
One day, a man’s favourite donkey fell into a well. He tried pulling the donkey out with ropes but no matter how hard he worked; he failed. The donkey was too heavy and not going anywhere. So, he buried the donkey alive rather than leaving him there to starve to death.
As he filled the hole with soil, the donkey shook off the dirt that landed on his back. The more dirt he shook off, the higher he rose. By noon, the donkey was out of the pit, grazing in the open field.
Moral: When life throws dirt on you, shake it off and take a step up. Your troubles are like stepping-stones. To rise above them, you have to learn from it, shake it off and move on. It might be easier said than done, but nothing is ever impossible.
Meaningless Goals
A farmer had a dog that used to sit by the roadside every day, waiting for cars to drive by. As soon as a car appeared, the dog would run down the road barking and chase after the moving vehicle. One day, the farmer’s neighbour asked the farmer, “Do you think your dog will ever catch a car?” The farmer replied, “That’s not what bothers me. What bothers me is what he would do if he ever caught one.”
Moral: Many people chase after meaningless goals, not sure what they will do once they reach it. When chasing after your goal, ensure you know what you want to achieve. Ensure that what you gain is worthwhile.
Smart Goals
Few people know what their main aim is in life. If you asked them what it is they want out of life, they would give you a vague answer, “I want to be happy, successful and make a good living.” These are all wishes, but none are clear goals. Without a well-defined goal, you will have no idea how to reach it.
When setting a goal, ensure your goal is SMART:
Specific – Make your goal specific. For example, I want to save R40 000 in 18 months to put a deposit down on a new car.
Measurable – Your goal must be measurable. If you can’t measure it, you will most likely not accomplish it. Measurement is a way of monitoring your progress.
Achievable – Your goal must be achievable. Achievable means it should be a challenge to reach but not impossible. Otherwise, it becomes disheartening.
Realistic – Is your goal realistic? You cannot save R40 000 in three months unless you win the lottery.
Time – Your goal should have a starting date and a finishing date.
Luck Favours Those Who Help Themselves
When a flood threatened a small village, everyone was ordered to evacuate, one man refused to leave and said, “God will save me. I have faith.” As the water level rose, a jeep drove through the floods to rescue the man. The man refused to get in the Jeep and once again said, “God will save me. I have faith.” As the water level rose further, he climbed to the second storey of a house, and as a boat came to rescue him, he refused to go with. He said, “God will save me. I have faith.” The water level kept rising, forcing the man to climb on the roof of the house. A helicopter came to rescue the man, but once again he refused and said, “God will save me. I have faith.” Eventually, the flood got so bad that it washed the man off the roof of the house. The man eventually drowned. When he reached the heavens, he angrily asked his God, “Why did you ignore my prayers and left me for dead?” His God replied, “Who do you think sent you the jeep, boat and helicopter?”
Moral: It takes action, preparation and planning rather than waiting, wondering or wishing to accomplish anything in life. Accept responsibility for your life and what you want to achieve rather than waiting for someone else to do it
